New Crops 2020 – Kohlrabi

My Slice of Mexico

For this gardening season, in addition to using my seed stock, I am growing crops from four new packets:

I have grown Long White Tokyo scallions and summer savory before, as well as cherry tomatoes (although not golden), but kohlrabi is a totally new-to-me crop.  From the German forms Kohl – cabbage and Rübe – turnip, kohlrabi received this name because of its globular shape, resembling a turnip:

This vegetable is often confused for an actual cross between a cabbage and a turnip, but it is in fact a variety of the cabbage species Brassica oleracea, which includes many other common cultivars such as cabbage (savoy, green, etc.), cauliflower, collard greens, kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.  Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea, Gongylodes Gp) was artificially created to produce swollen stems which grow above ground (as seen above.)

Recipe – Beef San Choy Bow

This is great for  fakeaway night. Friday night takeaway at home. Learnt that one when I joined The Healthy Mummy group, which is also where this recipe is from. Love this!! It is fresh and light and to be even better….healthy.

INGREDIENTS – Serves 4 – 390 Calories

Recipe – Chocolate Hobnobs

Yes, the biscuit of champions. Oaty with crunchy edges, smothered in chocolate, what’s not to like?

For 12 you will need:

  • 125g unsalted butter plus 30g for the chocolate topping
  • 50g golden caster sugar
  • 60g golden syrup
  • 100g porridge oats
  • 100g wholemeal flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch salt
  • 200g good quality milk chocolate

Using an electric whisk, combine the 125g butter with the sugar until it’s very pale. Add the golden syrup and whisk again.

Add the flour, oats, baking powder and salt and stir with a wooden spoon until well combined. Form into a burger, wrap in cling film and place in the fridge for 15-20 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees, place a sheet of grease proof paper on a large baking tray.

Swiss Vegetable Medley

I wanted to make sure, since I’m not and I didn’t know if others might not be sure either; but yes, California Mix or Blend Vegetable packs all contain: broccoli, cauliflower and carrots! Walmart Great Value and Birds Eye trade brands carry this frozen mix in a big bag. There are probably others who also carry it. (I’m not using to noticing it as “California blend or mix” I guess.

Swiss Vegetable Medley  Swiss Vegetable Medley

1 (16 oz.) package frozen California Mix vegetables
1 10.5 can condensed mushroom soup
(I use my own Gluten-free Mushroom Soup recipe)
1 c. shredded Swiss cheese
1 c. sour cream
1 (6 oz.) can French-fried onion rings (Gluten Free)
Pepper to taste

Preheat oven at 350 degrees.  Set aside 1/4 c. of cheese and 1/4 c. of onions.

In medium-sized bowl, combine thawed vegetables (broccoli, carrots & cauliflower), soup, 3/4 c. Swiss cheese, sour cream,  remaining french-fried onions and pepper.  Pour into a 2 quart casserole dish.

Bake 30 minutes.  Sprinkle reserved cheese and onions on top of casserole and bake an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Well you know? When I was having fun listing off extra spices in the reblog post below this today, I forgot to add parsley to the list and I really like parsley on a regular list of herbs and seasonings. So I add my vote to adding parsley onto the former list below.

Remarkably, in order to do this, I learn that a website like WebMD, besides others like Healthline and Almanac, review herbs and seasonings on their pages for the public to benefit for the knowledge to use.

I thought that was nice.

I love these but also: dill, tarragon, thyme, sage, saffron, nutmeg, brown sugar (isn’t really season but all the same; so also licorice), red pepper flakes, coarse salt, coarse ground pepper, (also fine salt and pepper), coarse sugar, refined baking flour (also again, not a season), paprika, green chili, chopped truffle, onion powder, truffle powder, chopped dried vegetables, chopped dried fruit, red chili (or pepperonccino (something I don’t know how to spell to this day; I’m Italian)); apple cider, rice vinegar, red wine vinegar, fruit compotes, gel esthers, durum wheat flour (okay that might be going too far, but then also, rye and mustard seeds and coriander and cardamom).

I’m sure there are still too many lost like all the pickled substances that are good for something delicious.

I was reading a post from Ella at thewackyspoon.com recently and she mentioned a “Well Stocked Spice Cabinet” and that made me think about my ten essential spices.  It didn’t take me very long for to come up with my ten.  These are the things I use nearly every day.  I’m taking a certain liberty by adding some dried herbs because I treat them like spices.

I believe many of these would find their way on many cook’s essential 10. What I find interesting (and sad) is what didn’t make the cut.

This is just a real treat for being stuck inside with no one to love you. (Or too many people to love.) All it needs is some pull apart cheesy breadsticks and some pot roast with vegetables, nothing else big. Okay double chocolate fudge brownies too!

Kitchen Sink Pasta

This was absolutely so wonderful of a recipe to me. I thought everyone in the world should have it in their recipe box. I thought the photograph was beautiful and so was all the advice. (Although very hot food is not something I can enjoy, I think just cayenne pepper with cumin and chili powder and tarragon will make it hot enough to make a sauce season mix)!

These are strange days we’re in. And strange days call for strange recipes. The name for this dish comes from the saying “everything but the kitchen sink.” Essentially, it’s what I had left over in my fridge on day 10 of my groceries. This recipe is made for swaps. Throw in beef, pork, mushrooms, onions, your hopes and dreams. They’ll cook up nicely.
